ARTIST STATEMENT

Drew Holguin is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on the importance of value, time and memory. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, border relations are nothing new. His religious upbringing has created a unique, playful and often cheeky way of exploring external and internal issues humanity faces on a day to day experience.

With "The Right Way", Holguin spent time reflecting on his time working on the Migrant Narratives Project. Whether it was sifting through migrant narrative's audio, photographing works from migrant children, running workshops with local students from El Paso, Texas, or conversing with others involved with the project, there was plenty of material to be influenced by.

Here, Holguin chose to depict the tale of Don Quijote, not just as the fictional folk tale, but as the exegetical character that has been revered worldwide. However, maybe what this issue needs isn't a meek, folky savior, but one riding in on a stallion, splitting the earth, letting his people go and experience the freedom humanity naturally desires. That, or maybe he spent too much time with children who don't know how the world actually works.
